Maple Wood Information
We provide a caring, welcoming environment with a focus on building friendships while having fun learning. We learn about our local environment by exploring, observing, and studying the plants, animals, and terrain found at our school sites in Chimacum and Sequim. Our monthly themes such as Coast Salish peoples, geology, and music inspire learning activities across the curriculum. Field trips to local beaches and hiking spots such as Tamonowas Rock are also a highlight of our program.
A typical day at Maple Wood begins with a welcoming greeting and our morning meeting. During the meeting students read the morning message and a poem or two that relates to our monthly theme or our nature studies. Students have opportunities to share news or special items such as an interesting rock. The morning meeting concludes with a group game. After snack we take a hike along the Dungeness River in Sequim or through HJ Carroll Park in Chimacum. Before lunch we have an activity that relates to our monthly theme such as reading a book or practicing observational drawing of natural items collected on our hike. We take an hour for lunch and play time. In the afternoon we offer projects which require more time and develop student focus. These projects may relate to the monthly theme, student interests, or teachers’ areas of expertise. We end the day with a closing circle where we discuss what students learned and share what they created.
Maple Wood offers a high quality educational program to supplement your homeschooler’s learning activities. Maple Wood operates on a school year schedule from September to June. Summer programs are offered if there is sufficient enrollment.
